Apple first starting using the "i" back in 1998 with the release of the iMac and was named so because the computer was for getting on the internet easily. The "i" eventually made its way into other Apple products because all of the products actually were for use with the internet. There were however only 3 acutual hardware products that used the "i" which were the iMac, iBook and the iPod. Some of the software also used it. The "i" has become for Apple what the SHIFT_ tagline has become for Nissan. To bad they didn't trademark it.

Marketing.

They have developed a brand presence around the iPod, and are leveraging how well this has been established in the market's vocabulary by using it as a naming convention for their other products.

And it works really well, doesn't it? The first thing I think of when I hear 'iPhone' is Apple.

Best to you.

Marketing gimmick. The truth is it works. iMac, iBook, iPod, iPhone... They're all Apple products.

ilink is a Sony thing, don't get that confused with Apple's Firewire.

Because it's their catch phrase if you will, it started way back when with the iMac, the "i" stood for internet, and since then, it really just caught on and every one loved it and identifies that trademark name with Apple.
