I am 46 and have had severe PMS most of my adult life. it got worse after having kids. the doctor just said that was because I had more stress in my life. anyway, anti depressants don't really work because you have to take them every single day in order for it to work on the two weeks you need it. I wouldn't recommend it.
instead, try to see if you can get something like a mild valium or xanax to take only when you start to get bitchy. it takes the edge off. it works for me. I don't take them every day only when that old PMS strikes.
otherwise, you can try OTC stuff like midol-works for some, not me, and the Bcomplex - i take that as well and it helps a little.
exercise helps too, but I still seem to get the moodiness no matter what.
just remember that it IS a hormone thing and that you are not bipolar or crazy. ... people have tried to convince me of that in the past but it always came back to the PMS.
I am just counting the time until I quit all together!!

I had severe PMS from the time I was 13. It got worse as the years went by, especially after having children. It got so severe that I contemplated suicide numerous times during my time of month. I was also very irritable and even my best friend would steer clear that time of month.
The doctor tried numerous things, including progesterone in many forms and antidepressants. Nothing made it better, many things made it worse, especially the hormones.
Finally the doctor did a hysterectomy. I already had 3 children, so I was open to it. I have to tell you that doctor saved my life!! I know that is extreme, but nothing else worked. This has been a wonderful solution to my problem.

I've heard to take the Midol or Pamprin a day or two in advance, before your period starts.
My daughter is trying Evening Primrose Oil capsules. Do your research, and you'll find that this is supposed to be a natural remedy for PMS, among other things. It balances your hormones. You can buy the capsules at the vitamin section of your local Walmart or Walgreens. Be consistent in taking them for a couple of months and maybe you'll find it helps.

If he's a good guy he'll understand it's a bad time for you. If he doesn't understand that then he might not be for you. Try to remain calm whenever interacting with him. Sometimes when interacting with friends or family members I have to pause for a moment and take a deep breath, count to ten, whatever. I try to calm down and remember that I'm a little more emotional than I normally am and to not take it out on people. It can be really tempting to snap out at people for their stupidity or yours, but it's not helpful. Are your periods normal? Some sites allow you to track your period for free like mymonthlycycles. It can be really helpful for you to track so you can be aware of what days you should not drink too much caffine, eat less salt, exercise more, etc.

Some women can not deal with PMS on their own. Sometimes it takes a little help. There are some anti-anxiety meds you can take just right before your period and during. The main one is called Sarafem. It is just another name for Prozac, but it really works. You really need to see your Doctor about getting some help.

PMS sucks from the cravings for salt to cramps to being extremely bitchy... heating pads work the best for cramps, green tea really helps boost you in the morning before bitching can even begin, but if you wake up pissed off haha a cold shower usually helps, esp. if you use soothing body washes with lavender in it. i recommend those beads or w/e they are that you put on the floor of the shower and goes through the air when the shower is on, it really helps. (sorry i forget what they are called)

I drink and smoke a little something.
No herbal cures work, the pill made me sick, diet and exercise alone didn't work...so I throw a few back 3 or 4 nights a month and take a puff or two.
Works like a charm

Echinacea, folic acid and B12. Also meditation seems to help a lot - I think it's the deep breathing that aerates the blood hence more oxygen. When one is stressed the breathing tends to become more shallow. Best of luck.

Take some midol, get a heating pad, and take a nice long nap. Works for me every time.
