Wall outlets have two types of connections. The most common are the terminal lugs (screws on the side). These are color coded so that polarity is not reversed. The brass (gold) color lugs are for the load (black) wire and the zinc (silver) color is for the neutral (white) wire. The third lug (green in color) is for the ground lead (green or bare wire). The other connection is the "quick connect" which you push the wire into a small hole located on the back of the outlet (four holes, two at top and bottom of appliance). The ground lead will still have to be connected at the grounding lug (green screw).

Yes It does "Matter" You could be killed!!!!!
In general A "Green Wire" will go to a "Ground"
Screw, located on the "Bottom of the outlet!! and now days, the screw will be colored "Green"
The "Black Wire" shoud go on a "Brass Screw"
The "White Wire" is known as a ground or common ground and should be connected to the Silver colored screw.
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are new at electricity, Should"NOT" work on any electricity of any kind, without first consulting someone who has full knowledge of electricity and the known dangers. As an example let us say that you have shut off an outlet that was wired correctly. and are working on another outlet, "That an "Idiot" wired in reverse. HOT wire, black, to ground and white to the brass Hot screw. When you do this this Lead (wire could and most likely cause a short and or electrical feed back and could greatly injure you and or even kill you.
another important item is always turn off all power to the circut you are working on,BUT!!! check this with an OHM METER,
a. Make sure it works correctly, Learn it's operation and then prove you can use it correctly with a person with electrical knowledge with you, if not in doubt after this then proceed and turn OFF the electric on the circut you are working on , and Check too see if wires are dead, with no electric reading When checked, If you still aren't sure then shut off the circut breaker. and disconect the Hot screw Black wire and the ground "White Wire that is inside the Junction electrical box and cap them off with a plastic wire connector (thats a thingy that holds two wires together. WAIT NOW don't fasten the white and black wire together
Don't touch any bare wire or terminal with any part of your body Now put a connector on the end of each one.
By this time I may well have you confused and You maybe should be, thats why I am writing this as I am.
You see, There are many things a new person can run into with out knowing it and sometimes in training The teacher may be very good but may miss something. Suppose You are going to replace an outlet. O>K>
Now you have went to the source of electric and read the inside of the door on the electrical control box and you look at # 12 and it the switch is turned off . #12 is marked on the bedroom that you are working on to change the outlet. (Isn't that simple) but wait, to be sure that no electric comes through the lines, you get your screwdriver out and loosen very carefully the Black screw which is the "Hot wire and cap it off. then tracing the Commom ground "wire" or the "White wire: and also disconnect that also. O
Wrong!!!!!!! What if these wires were reversed?
What if these wires were not to the same outlet you were working on/ and the outlet is still hot!!

So, we are now back to square one!!! (1)
Learn, Train, Watch, Do it yourself after checking everything 100 % and never trust the person who installed the wires before you were born!!! Since yuo generally can not see all of the wires in the wall , and most wires look the same. How do you know that you turned off or disconnected the correct wires. or someone did not reverse them as per your question?????

You never should be afraid of Electricity, But you should respect it!!!!!!!!!!!! and since you asked on the internet . You should be able to find valuable information about this. IF not Go to your public Library, or go to a Local Electrician for assistance. Never trust someone on this, always find a known person that knows electricity, If all else fails you could even go too most any named Company or College and speak to an engineer or teacher, or qualified person.
Remember If you dive in the Ocean "Sharks" bite and sometimes kill.
and if you mess with Electricity, IT can also bite!!! and also KILL
Be smart, Learn- Learn- there are many ways of wiring and each has a diagram, A good rule of thumb is
IF YOU DON"T KNOW HOW!!! DON'T DO IT!!!
Good Luck with you reading about Electric
If in doubt!!!! HIRE SOME ONE
You can work to pay them
Dead, You can"t !!!!!!

It matters yes. 100%. You might also consider ensuring that the wires are securely connected. To test for the latter pull the wires to see if they're giving.

If you are talking about which wire goes to which screw on the outlet, it matters. North American standard is: white wire goes to the silvery screw; black wire to the brass screw; ground wire (if there is one, and there should be) to the green screw.
