The key to compassion is be able to understand the other person's perspective, their feelings, their views etc.
Most often people who are not compassionate are merely worried about just one person - themselves. This limits their ability to understand the other person's pain, likes, dislikes, point-of-view and what not. This automatically leads to an uncompassionate behavior or rather "I am right, and I don't care what you think".
Through compassion comes feelings of love, respect and the bridge you build by showing compassion to others especially ones you love, will be a very solid bridge that cannot be burned.
So start caring, and listening and understanding what others feel.
