For a while, we had 5 competing string theories based on 10 dimensions, of which 4 are from the usual 4D spacetime we're familiar with, and 6 are from 6D Calabai-Yau spaces. Then came along Witten with his 11-dimensional M-theory, based on branes, which incorporated all of the 5 different versions which he SHOWED TO BE MATHEMATICALLY EQUIVALENT! I ALREADY WROTE TO YOU ABOUT THIS!!! Anyway, the current popular horse in physics has 11 dimensions, but I doubt if that will be the last we'll hear from this.

Actually, string theory added an 11 th dimension. This enabled the theorist to show that the previous 5 versions of string theory were actually all the same, so now there is only one version. They have also renamed it to M or membrane theory. The other benefit was the ability to extrapolate back beyond the big bang and show (theoretically) that time existed prior to the big bang. Also, the cause of the big bang was membrane collision.

right now there are 10 defined dimensions, but god only knows...
have to remember science is all about the evolution of what we theorize and know.
