Taken orally, Epsom Salt will act as a laxative, a safe laxative, but of course not to take everyday. Just as a warning though, it has a very strong metallic taste. Epsom Salt used in a bath or foot soak (or soak any other body part, hands, legs, arms) helps draw toxins out of the body. Soaks can also be used to draw infection out of things like in-grown toenails, poison ivy, etc.

it's supposed to be a good laxative, and the directions are actually written on the box so you get the right amount

Only if you need a laxative once in a while. It is not good if taken regularly.
