How long after buying and using mascara should you discard it? I've heard after 3 months.....after 6 months....

I've read in most magazine that you should throw out your mascara after 3 months. I find it a load of bull...some mascaras just last longer than others. I throw mine out when...
- it starts to smell funny
- it clumps more/it dries out
- if the performance dramatically worsens
Additionally, I don't think you should keep the same mascara for more than 6 months. :)

I believe it's every 3-4 weeks... or 4-5... but yeah. It's because of the bacteria growth.
