I know that Columbus discovered an island in the Caribbean which is technically part of N. America. But does anyone know who discovered what is now the continental US? (the lower 48).

~~ Ponce de León went on to become the first confirmed European to arrive in the continental US when he landed in Florida on April 2, 1513.

~~ Remember that before the European colonization of the Americas, a process that began at the end of the 15th century.
The present-day continental U.S. was inhabited exclusively by various indigenous tribes, including Alaskan natives, who migrated to the continent over a period that may have begun 35,000 years ago and may have ended as recently as 11,000 years ago.

~~ The first confirmed European landing in present-day United States territory was by Christopher Columbus, who visited Puerto Rico on November 19, 1493.

The first european who discovered US was Christophe Colomb in 1492. He was working for the spanish king and had to find a new way for spices because the venitians had the monopole in that commerce and were selling spices very expansive at the other european countries. Anyway Colomb arrived on the US continent and thought it was India (that's because the indigens there were called indians). He never knew he discovered a new continent.
After that I think it's Ameriguo Vespucci who returned there and found it was a new continent to which he gave his name (Ameriguo became America)

Grog of the Cave Bear Clan was dubbed "first discoverer of continental US" by the ape-like elders of the tribe in the Year 36,563 BC for being the first to cross the Bering Strait ice bridge.``
