I've been listening to Metallica since I bought the Black Album. And only recently have I heard that people have been denouncing these music geniuses as sellouts. Why?
First of all, they had Bob Rock, the destroyer of bands. He came up with the idea of making the Black Album and worked with the band until after Saint Anger, and now they have the producer from Slayer and Slipknot. Are you happy now? So, now you can stop whining about the Black Album because the producer for that is gone.
Second of all, Metallica did Black Album-St. Anger to show that they had the guts, no, the balls to do something as intelligent as "The Memory Remains", "I Disappear", "King Nothing", "Mama Said", "The Unforgiven I & II" and other songs. I can say this loud and clear: I LOVE THE LOAD/RELOAD ERA! You can't have hard and heavy riffs all the time or else you'll get bored with it. That's what happened with me and Green Day, even though I still love the band. If you keep playing heavy, it's gonna get borin

When it comes to the Black Album, I'd guess that Metallica had built up a militia of frenzied fans who almost worshipped them as the metal gods they are. But, don't you think the band wanted even more of an audience? Sure, you may have your sister who was listening to Duran Duran wanting the Black Album, and then you wonder if your music was really good. I can agree with that for the fact that I've had my ears bleed from hearing any St. Anger song.
Now, do I hate "Black Album", "S&M", "St. Anger", etc.? Kinda, but S&M was more of a branching point for the band. That's when they decided to expand the sound of Master of Puppets and other songs to make it more fancy, artsy, per sei. Black Album appealed to me, and that's what got me in. For you art freaks out there and those that read Shakespearian crud, Load got you. ReLoad didn't get anyone unless you wanted more of Load. St. Anger didn't appeal to anybody unless they wanted to see if Rob sounded worse than Newstead.

More and more people pan them for the Napster thing. Why? The band had legal rights to do that. How would you like that if you just made something and now it's been stolen and heard by everyone when you wanted to keep it a small secret? You wouldn't like it. That's how the band felt, although mostly Lars. I would've hated it if my band decided to release some b-sides and now everyone knows about 'em.
I've named most things, but now I'm going to get to the one that really burns me: the panning of the Load era. I can see that after you've heard Black Album, you're hoping "It was just one time, they'll get heavy again. Just wait..." and then you hear King Nothing or I Disappear and you're just like "WTF?" I can sympathize with that. But, I can honestly say that this was the most artistic and intelligent album of all of them. ReLoad may have been better in sound, but Load really hit subjects like Shakespearian plays, Jame's mother's death, drug addiction, etc. ReLoad took whatever was...

left and made it an album. Cheap, but worth it.
And then we have the plastic flaming worm baby that is St. Anger. No solos, bad drums and James' voice. I've heard it all. And I don't need to talk about that because my question will become a sermon. But, now I've seen live performances and have people saying how bad James' voice is. And honestly, how does that affect their music? I mean, come on, people, you can't sing like you're 20-30 when you're 40 years old and have blown your voice out from growling on your albums. I do admit that now, to me, he kinda sounds like a growling country star without a voice, which I know doesn't make since. But the voice doesn't really add anything to that at all.
And finally, you've got the hair issue: it's not about the length of your hair, it's about the music you make.
I can honestly say that this was the last thing I say and if I hear one word about Metallica on the answers, I will go into a homicidal fury. See ya.
(P.S. Green Day is music.)

Dude your so true...not everyone can make albums like load, reload S&M(which was totaly awesome how they mixed the symphony with all the heavy songs) and st.anger.i only didnt like the drum sound on the last record otherwise it was as fast and heavy as justice for all except for the solos...by the way those ******* who say lars can double kick anymore can go listen to st.anger intro and shut the hell up.metallica is about music not the legnth of their hairs.people(other shitty bands fans) are usualy jealouse when they see 60 000 people are still going to metallica concerts and enjoy(worship) them(ME BEING ONE OF THEM)...they changed style of course and thats what has held them so long...long live mighty metallica

First, you listen to Green Day, so you can't possibly understand good music.
Secondly, put on Kill Em All and then put on their new stuff. Doesn't sound like the same band, does it?
People hate Metallica because they changed and diluted what was once a great band and expected to get the same respect they did during Puppets and Lightning. They are playing for the radio and not from their hearts.
Then they said they don't want anyone to be their fan if they download their music while they sit in their mansions and lars sips wine while looking at his art collection. That's not metal.
They have all turned into a bunch of saps more concerned with fashion and style than metal. Except for maybe James, who is still kind of badass and Robert, who is too new to be corrupted by them and has the cred from years spent as a badass bassist in other bands.
and the whole "talk about your feelings, I need a therapist" garbage they are into is lame as hell. No real metal band, no rock and rollers do that. They turned wimpy. Period.

People are by nature very fickle. Just look at how college football fans turn on their backs on players over the littlest of things. I mean, after the embarrassing loss to Florida in the BCS NC, I was criticizing Troy Smith like a madman even after everything he had done for Ohio State football. Look, though Metallica's music is nowhere near as good as it used to be (RTL, MOP, AJFA), they are still better than any other band out there. I cannot think of ANY band that, from Black onward, has consistently made better music than them. James Hetfield is a master songwriter. Whenever I think of my favorite rock/metal songs (excluding Jimi), I have to go through like 15 Metallica songs before I get to Crazy Train or whatever. Here are my top 20 rock/metal songs, FWIW:
(1) Fade to Black
(2) Master of Puppets
(3) One
(4) Blackened
(5) Dyer's Eve
(6) Orion
(7) Battery
(8) And Justice for All
(9) Ride the Lightning
(10) Disposable Heroes
(11) Call of Kutulu
(12) Crazy Train (Randy Rhodes)
(13) Cult of Personality (Living Colour)
(14) To Live is to Die
(15) Damage Inc.
(16) Fight fire with fire
(17) Angel of Death (Slayer)
(18) For Whom the Bell Tolls
(19) Killing in the Name (Slayer)
(20) Sweet Child of Mine (Guns)

Yeah you're absolutly right!
Metallica is one of the best bands of our time & one of my all time favourites!
I think they did great albums, no matter in 80's or 90's (of course I prefer the 80's).
And about their last record, ..you can't really blame these great musicians for just making a single poor album!!
I mean Metallica has 10 brilliant albums alongside St.Anger!
Why don't you all notice them??
Even Queen (which is my #1 favourite band, #2 is Metallica...)
has made some shocking, or rather dissapointing stuff during its history, such as ''Hot Space''!
But , you know, they've made a large number of amazing records, ''A night at the opera'', ''Innuendo''...
You can't sue Metallica, Queen, Slayer...or Any other band, just bacause they've made 1 or 2 poor albums!!
Metallica has reached the ''Top'' in 1986, & that's enough for a band to be ''Honored'' forever!!

On the plus side The New Song and The Other New Song are the best the band has done in years, and I hear they're developing The Shadow Of The Cross further for the new album too.

Sorry, but Green Day is LAME. Not even in the same building as Metallica, who by the way I don't like as much as in 1984-88 because of their hypocritical murdering of the original napster, and consequently siccing the RIAA on every music fan who wants only the songs that are any good from the albums that are crafted to satisfy recording contracts and fat cats who don't understand the gravitational pull of gotta-have-it rock-n-roll. Who cares about socalled rights to destroy the very freedoms they enjoyed themselves, recording albums to share with friends. Alas, things have changed and although Metallica's music is instantly recognizable and identified with the formative years of generation X it is Dated. PS I last saw Metallica live in SF in Nov 05.
The Black album is excellent, as is much of every release after, but I am not impressed with Metallica's following the trend of airing their therapist dirty laundry crap..GET OVER IT. And download some music!

People are funny, and stupid. Bottom line, fans hate change. They want the same old same old, and couldn't handle it when Metallica did something different. Screw em. The guys GREW UP! They werent the same folks they were when they put out Kill em all. Personally, i would like Metallica even less if they tried to keep putting out what they originally had. Know why? CUZ MEGADETH'S NEW STUFF IS GARBAGE! And that is what we woulda had. Crappy old men putting out crappy metal. I cannot WAIT to hear their new stuff... cuz it;s gonna be damn good, cuz theyre coming back fresher than ever. Oh yeah... ST. Anger? Not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

I do like metallica i love their old stuff but anything like St.Anger was really bad. I guess that was the low point you can't really like St. Anger, compare any other songs to the songs in St. Anger and you'll realize that there is a difference. Although no one can bash them because they made metal more main stream.

i understand your point, now hear mine; but keep in mindd that I listened to them before the megadeath thing happened.
When they first hit the scene they were furious, and angry about everything. They wrote songs like Fight Fire with Fire that were like words from the Bible for my generation. They denounced the bands that were called "metal" but played music that was appealing to the masses, the refused to do videos because they were after a different crown than the early mtv audience.
Then, out of the blue they do th evideo for One. Okay, we thought but they still rock hard with Master of Puppets. Then the black album comes out and my sister was listening to them. THey then cut their hair. Then all the sudden, they redo a Bob Seger song? WTF? The Bob Seger thing was the final straw for me; in my mind they went after the older crowd that they shunned by saying "hey, we're cool again, see? Seger?" Listen to Ride the Lightning, then listen to St Stupid again.
Don't get me wrong, they made LOTS of money doing it. James says "yeah, we sold out, every night." In my mind, that was like saying we don't care about your crowd as much as we like the money; the comlete opposite of what they said when they started.
