After the nail-biting loss to the Pats, I am curious to know if Chokenheimer should be replaced (being a Charger fan, I'd like to have a coach with a better playoff record). If so, who do you think would be a good replacement for him?

Marty Schottenheimer is PLAYOFF DEATH! He is SIX straight "one and outs" and that was with THREE conference leaders! He is the absolute WORST playoff coach in the history of the NFL. For those idiots who think that just letting him keep trying year after year will somehow "magically" result in a SB down the road, you better wake up, this isn't Bill Cowher we're talking about here!

This year Schottenheimer not only had the best team in the NFL, he had one of the top three overall teams in the past 10 years! The team that beat him, the Patriots didn't even have one of the top three Patriots teams of the past ten years!

If the coaches had been reversed, Belichick in SD and Schottenheimer in NE, the final score would have been 47-3! The undicipline, the dropped passes, fumbled interceptions, the totally predictable play calling again and again, the bad penalties, those things all reflect how a coach has gotten his team ready for the big game! Schottenheimer is not just a complete loser, he is a team DESTROYER. Look at the empty, ruined husks of teams that NEVER go anywhere that he left behind in Cleveland and KC!

If that's what you want year after year after year after year in San Diego, frustration, low morale, terrible playoff loses, underachieving teams and plain old heartbreak, just keep Marty there.................

(Oh, Mr. Samurai, THERE you are! It gives me NO great pleasure to say it because the Chargers are a great team that deserved much better, but I did warn you, did I not! Martyball is NEVER dead!!!!!!)

I don't blame them for firing Marty, but I blame them big time for hiring Norv Turner. The first poster here had it right, he should be no higher than O.C. which he excels at. The Peter principle is proved when Norv gets a head coaching gig. The Chargers had their man, Wade Phillips, and they did not take advantage...idoits. And I am a Charger fan... I think they should go after Buddy Ryan's boy, Rob. Of course that would be crossing a pretty big line, stepping from the Raiders to the Chargers, but if the Chargers benefit, I don't have a problem with accepting a Raider. ( I should say another Raider, since Norv is a Raider also, but hey, I did not accept him)

I think he's done a great job this year. The playoff loss can't be put on his shoulders, he didn't turn the ball over 4 times. But you're right, given his track record with A.J. Smith, he will probably be gone next season. I think the best man for the job would be Cam Cameron, he knows the team, and he's looking for a head coaching job next year. I think he is probably the most likely candidate, if he's willing to take Marty's job.

As a lions fan... Brown eyed girl is a maroon. This was our coaches first year. You are thinking of our GM... and they could hang him for all i care. Can;t wait to see what we do with the number 2 pick... God... Anyways, if they fire a 14-2 coach with what is out there... the Chargers are just stupid. If their was a Pete Carrol available, or a Parcells or a someone who was an OBVIOUS improvement, maybe. But after a 14-2 season, and losing to Tom Freaking Brady, (GO U of M glory years, stupid Cornhuskers) by 3 points, with a Quarterback playing his first full season, his first REAL PLAYING TIME, winning the division, with a returning cast like he has, wow... It would be lunacy to fire him. Unless they wanna trade with the Lions. I'll take a 14-2 record and a playoff berth over a 2-14 record and Rod Marinelli. Even if the last time Marty won a palyoff game was with montana in K.C., he is the best Coach you could have right now. So if they give him up, they deserve to lose.

I think Marty should stay. A few more years here in SD and the Chargers will be Super Bowl champs. They are already on the right track. Yes they lost a home game in the playoffs to the Patriots, but they were 14-2 during the regular season. This team is building up for a very bright future.

This isn't my recommendation, but imagine if they brought in his son, Brian, to coach the team? Talk about a conflict of interest.

There really is no coach that's out there that the Chargers could pick up. They should wait a year and then enter the race for Bill Cowher's services, though I doubt Cowher wants to coach out west.

I think Marty will stay as their coach. After years of conservative playcalling, he finally let loose a little bit this year. (Especially after the loss to the Ravens.) He got to a playoff game, let loose a little bit too much (4th and 11?) and lost the game. In the last year or so, though, he has shown the ability to evolve as a coach. I think he learned his lesson about being too lax in this game, he'll have the offseason to ponder his shortcomings, and he'll come back as a balanced and efficient coach.

But if he sucks next year, he gets Da Boot. 'Nuff said.
