Deforestation in Ethiopia - Section II
Today, I went to “Wikipedia.com” and typed in deforestation, went down to the Ethiopia, section and found out a few things. Like this, Deforestation occurs when people clear forests for personal needs such as, for hunting, fuel, or when they need the land to grow and harvest crops. But the main reasons are the shifting agriculture and fuel wood. Ethiopia has the second largest population in Africa and has been hit by famine many times, mostly because there was a depletion of natural resources. The overpopulation of the land caused people to cut down the trees for uses such as firewood and clear the land for crops. If the population keeps growing in Ethiopia, then the deforestation rate will rise, and the country has already lost 98% of it’s forest in the last 50 years. The forests have a very important part in protecting erosion from Ethiopia because the trees would block rain and wind from getting to the soil. They also help to reduce global warm

ing by the uptake of carbon dioxide. Forests have a pretty big role in the lives of the people who live in Ethiopia. For example the trees are used to cook their food and to build their homes. Their traditional medicines come from the trees and forest plants. Forests also play a role in religious beliefs, it’s believed that the holy spirits would treat human beings the same if they were treated equally. 42 million hectares of Ethiopia’s land was covered by trees but recent studies show that that it has gone down about 14%. Mostly because of the growing population, the growing needs, and the addition of the inadequate knowledge of the benefit the trees give. Ethiopia loses about 141,000 hectares of natural forests each year due to deforestation. Between 1990 and 2005, studies show that the country has actually lost about 2 hectares of land, and because of that, the number of animals living in the forest have gone down also.
