I have a friend who was born with Cerible Palsy(?). She depends on a walker to get around. She's trying to find work but nobody wants her. She did finally find an occupation as a lunchtime supervisor in a public school at $10.00/day.
She has to pay 82% of her disability allowance for rent alone! Her job pays $120.00 for a 2 week period. If there are 3 paydays in a month she gets money deducted, no compensation for school holidays and no averaging income over the year. Each month she has to supply documents of income and expenses with her walker by bus, on top of all the abuse from the social worker for any little mistakes.
I think that she deserves her assistance. And I hope that some of the people who condemn those "welfare bums" never get into a situation like that.
The former chairman of the U.S. treasury once stated that the unemployment figure of 3 1/2% was too low and would cause inflation! So we must have unemployed or underemployed to keep inflation in check. So who is responsible for feeding and housing them? Are they not entitled to be lifted by the rising tide? Instead of just getting in deeper over their heads?

It all depends what a person wants out of life. If you a half-wit it welfare sounds wonderful, but if you are a proud individual financial security is the goal. Welfare reform is the half-wit’s enemy. The unfortunate people that legitimately deserve it, welfare can be their only means of survival.
