take the -log[concentration]

The pH is the negative base 10 log of the H or H3O+ concentration. I hope you understand the math, otherwise it is too much to explain here.

Examples: conc. of H is 1 x 10E-1 then pH is 1
conc. of H is 1 x 10E-7, the pH is 7

keep in mind that conc of H and OH will multiply to 1 x 10E-14

Equation for pH:

pH = -log [H+]

[ ] brackets mean concentration of the H+ ion.
"log" is a function on your calculator.
