According to DRM,Microsoft,RIAA,Apple and Congress DMA of 1998 it is ilegal to make 1 copy of a Copyrighted work without paying the Copyright Owner for that work.
Thats the law. The idea they are trying to impart is, if you want a CD for your boat, buy one, if you want an extra one for your mom, buy her one. If you want one your wife can listen to at the house while you want to listen to it on the boat, buy 2.
I can sorta understand the reasoning behind it, but then again, it is kinda hurting the artists more than helping.
If you did not buy them then they are ilegal copies.

Read the legal notice provided by the manufacturer. It's usually on the back of the manual. Some manufacuters allow licensees (buyers of their products) to create one copy of the software that the buyer bought) as a reserve. Some others don't. However, even if the manufactures don't allow you to do so, you still have certain rights. In some states, this prohibition don't apply by law (so, depending in what state you are living in, you may still be able to do so).

I think it is the people who copy and then sell that they are after. But I could be wrong.
