Well first those laws are city or town by-laws. NOT criminal laws. But I believe that it is against the law as the city or town obviously makes more money from the tickets they issue than they do from the parking meter itself. But if there is a good citizen out there that puts money into someones meter they will not get the money from the ticket and will have saved someone a few bucks. I have on occasion fed a strangers meter and will continue to do so at times.

I don't know but I think it is a dumb law. I used to work downtown in the city I live in and the only parking was by meters. I would plug that thing 4 times a day if not more. I also plugged my friends and co-workers meters if needed. Someone told me it was illegal and I could get a ticket for it. That made me laugh, a random act of kindness is against the law. How absurd.

While I believe it should not be against the law to look out for the welfare and interests of others, I'm guessing that it has something to do with either owning up to one's responisbilities, or more likely, because in paying someone else's debts such as parking meters, it steals from the coffers of the city government. Go figure.

Its obvious: cities make more money from parking violation fines than they do from paid parking. They budget a certain income from fines and if some good Samaritan goes around feeding meters they get "cheated". Its sick and a slap in the face of the citizens but what's new.
