Although I was intently disappointed by the end of the movie, I think the film "Contact" had the best expression to answer this question.
The quote was something like "Well, it would be an awful waste of space if (there were not other species of creatures on another planet out there)".
With the vastness of space, I think that there is either (a) a planet with life on it somewhere out there right now, or (b) there has been and will be other planets out there that support life when the Earth does not support life. I can not possibly conceive that we are alone or unique in all the galaxies that are out there.
To me, the real question is "Will we ever achieve the technological advancements that will be able to bridge the time-space gaps that allow us to meet or discover life-forms from another planet?"
As most advancement on our planet is wholly motivated by profit, I doubt the answer to the question I postulate above will be "Yes". I am hoping that I am wrong... I am hoping that we discover something more important to us than the almighty dollar and this leads to our involvement in the types of exploration considered in some science fiction mediums.
I think that if we do not move beyond the pursuit of money, we may never even truly explore what is within us, let alone what is out there in space!
Don't get me wrong... I am not a doomsayer... I too find my adult world ruled by the pursuit of monetary gains in order to put food on the table and a roof over my loved one's heads... However, I hope that in the future we do come to a more beautiful existence than what we have now!

Sure, why not! There is so many things about space, planets, and other universes that we have to learn about. It's kind of selfish to think that we are the only life forms.

Yes, but they prefer to be called extra-terrestrial biological entities. Alien means something naughty in their language. But I am not sure there are any that look like us.

Even if they do exist somewhere out there, there's an excellent chance we'll never get together. But, we may one day communicate with them.

They could exist in many different forms. We already know that carbon-based beings are not the only life forms....
