History is important because by knowing our past we can better shape our future. By knowing our errors, we can try to avoid them in the future.
One day you are going to be an important decision maker in shaping the future of our world and you need to know all the awful things people can do to one another to help keep us on the right path.
Also, when you study history you get an idea of how minor events can cause major reactions. Wars have been started for pretty rediculous things in some cases. It is really important to get an idea of just how complex the world is and to realize how some people can be offended easily and others are extremely prejudiced against others.

It is more important today than ever. The holocaust is the clearest example of how evil people can be and what evil is. With how hostile people are today not only to religion but to any suggestion that there are social standards that people simply must follow, It is a supreme lesson in right and wrong that cannot be argued with by anyone of sound mind. Unlike the Bible, there is no rational arguement against the holocaust.

Which one? There have been so many! Like Stalin killing 10 million Russians, or the Khmer Rouge killing millions and millions of refugees, or the American Indian holocaust, where countless tribes were wiped out, or the recent one in Rwanda Africa. All we seem to hear about these days (and for decades before) is the jewish holocaust. Read about the Balfour Doctrine.
