Wow, after reading all those answers, I guess I'm lucky to live where I do - I can get a small bristlenose pleco for $2-$3. So that would mean the answer to your question is - depends on where you live!

The important question is not, "How much does it cost to keep a plecostomus?" The important question is, "How long do you wish to keep your plecostomus alive before it dies?" A pleco can live more than 20 years and get up to 2 feet long. If you want to keep it that long, you need to take care of it. A pleco needs dark places to hide. It needs BIG TIME air in the tank, not just a gurgling little bubble. It needs lots of water movement. And it needs the proper food. Algae tablets are good. Spirulina pellets are great. Different kinds of lettuces or zuchinni, attached to a rock with a rubber band, are perfect. My pleco is trained to eat from my hand, and his favorite food is nori -- which I get at my local organic food market. Nori is dried, pressed seaweed which sushi lovers use to wrap Japanese food in. Your pleco will love you if you feed him nori.

Don't feel bad about asking questions - personally, I would much rather see questions from a concerned, conscientious hobbyist than stupid questions from some idiot who wants to know if anyone enjoys watching the grass grow. I've looked at your question and thumbs up to you!
Online retailers offer them $7 - $10. Good Luck!

They can cost anywhere from $15 to $30, depending on the size. They're fine to go with goldfish. Minimum temp for a pleco is 73 degrees, max, 80. Goldies average is 72 and can go up to 80 if necessary, so they're fine. Actually, a rubbernose might be better as they can stand a little lower temp and ph levels. Just remember the site I gave to you. Here it is again.
Oh, and sorry for yelling at you. I'm just glad that you're doing so much research. Thank you for being a responsible pet owner.

I have seen them from 10 dollars all the way up to 40+ dollars. They are rare and then when you do find one it is hard to find a good specimen. Or least thats how it is here

You should look for the youngest one you can find. You might be able to get one that's between 5 and 10 dollars.

I hope you are not putting it with goldfish, you are going to cause suffering. Do you really want to cause suffering to a living creature?
