i got an email saying that if i got an email that said "invitation", don't open it. they said it was a virus that would burn my c drive. they said to email it to all your friends to let them know.

is this another annoying circulating email, or is it real?

Check http://www.snopes.com - copy and paste part of the e-mail into the search engine and they can confirm or deny it for you.

Sounds like a scam that could be a virus.
Most virus infect your computer when you open an attachment.
Lately they have found some viruses that can infect your computer just when you open the email itself.

If you don't know the sender the wise thing to do is dump it without looking at it.
