fish don't care that much what it is as long as you provide stuff to swim around and hide out in. think of your aquarium as a fish playground. live plants serve a purpose of stabilizing the tank so throwing in live plants that are easy to grow like java moss and java fern serve more than just decorative purposes. i always recommend setting up tanks with stuff in the middle instead of on the outside -- its like setting up a track for your fish to swim on instead of them just hanging out in the middle with not much going on. in larger aquariums try for a figure 8 swim track. i put asian teacups in with all my bettas -- some of them make them homes and some couldn't care less about them. it should look pleasing to you depending on your personal aesthetic but it should look like home for your fish -- that means a place to hang out and have fun.

Yes, thats why they sell those hideous flouresant castles!! lol kidding. No its not.. most fresh water fish are bread in huge tanks not set up to duplicate the wild , but with convenience to the person breeding all these fish. The wholesalers ive been to had big small round swimming pools. Was neat. We buy all the plants, driftwood, rocks ect to try to create a more realistic atmosphere for the fish. So its more like there natural enviornment, even if they have never seen it..Its good to have places to hide, places to lay eggs depending on the fish, and if your like territorial fish, places to call theres.. I do it just because it looks nice. I want a realistic looking tank.

I guess it's mainly to add interest and to make your fish's life more enjoyable. Plants can also be used as something for your fish to eat as well as normal food. Objects that fish can hide in are also good because shy fish or any fish like somewhere to hide. I think the reason why people say add plants, sand, rocks etc is to make the tank more like the fish's natural habitat.

Yes. Adding plants and roks (especially live plants) Helps reduce the stress in fish. Yes fish get stressed. And if you put ur tank in your living room i think that making it look real give s the room a good feeling. Having fish is a fun hobby and more responsibility than a dog or a cat.

well to make it more interesting life. put it this way, keeping fish is just like taking the fish away from their family and the wild, and holding them into a glass prison. the best thing to keep them happy is to make the tank look way natural like their habitat so they will feel right at home and woudn't die of stress. also, plants add oxygen and other health benefits to the fish like getting rid of cloudiness, taking away harmful chemicles {like trees and gases}.
