This is what the military say's about it:

"Don't try to discuss politics with a military member or a veteran.. We are Americans, and we all bleed the same, regardless of our party affiliation. Our Chain of Command is to include our Commander-In-Chief (CinC). The President (for those who didn't know) is our CinC regardless of political party. We have no inside track on what happens inside those big important buildings where all those representatives meet. All we know is that when those civilian representatives screw up the situation, they call upon the military to go straighten it out. If you keep asking us the same stupid questions repeatedly, you will get your *** kicked!"

Ideaman, Nixon ran from Vietnam and Reagan ran from Lebanon where 242 Marines were killed by Hezbolla, a terrorist group. He sold arms to our enemy as well. ( And Eisenhower started Vietnam. The Vice president was Richard Nixon)

It looks like there are 43 Democrats and 46 Republicans in the House currently who are veterans, including 1 woman. There were 7 Democrats in combat and 6 Republicans!

I surmise that your question is meant to prove a point concerning the right of one political party to talk about patriotism, sacrifice, the virtues of military life, and having the right to dictate the purpose of the military.

I don’t know the answer to this question out of hand, but let me offer one caveat. You have to be specific when you talk about the military. After all, our President was in the National Guard (at sometime…God knows when), but most serious soldiers who serve in infantry divisions in the Marines and Army would hardly think this is true military service because there is no eminent risk to life or limb. His stint in the National Guard was hardly a sacrifice and doesn’t deserve merit.

Unfortunately most of our so called “ military veteran” politicians fall more in line with Bush’s category of “servicemen” than the John Kerry type; a man who truly did face enemy fire as a soldier in the field and could have died. For example Donald Rumsfeld, a very hawkish conservative who talks a tough game about the war, served in the US NAVY as a naval aviator and flight instructor and was therefore completely sheltered from any chance of seeing life threatening combat. No true blooded patriotic Marine or Army soldier who served in the mine strewn fields of Vietnam would ever consider the service of a Navy seamen or Air Force mechanic on par with their own because no true risk was involved, and in most cases it is the infantry divisions of the Army and Marines where lives are forfeited for our countries objectives.

With that all this said, if most of our politicians can be categorized with the George Bush and Donald Rumsfield variety of military enlistee, what credit is it to them or their party for they don’t know the meaning of sacrifice or risking ones life for ones country that much more than a civilian does?

I sincerely think that your question is a good one, but it should be rephrased. It should be asked which party has more infantrymen (either Army, Marines, Navy Seals) who have fought in a major armed conflict in the past 60 years? I think a question like that is better at assessing who has more right to talk about the military and patriotic duty.

Republicans by 2 to 1. Active military has voted this percentage for years.

Republicans. Dems just cut and run. Clinton ran and hid in Russia to get indoctrinated to communist dogma rather than fight communists in 'Nam.
