Because you and I wouldn't be here if it weren't for cell division.
BTW, if this is a homework question, you should know, lazyness is more dangerous to your life than you think.
Ahem, if cells don't divide, life doesn't happen. As simple as that. The first cells on Earth had to divide for all the rest to come along. When you grow, do you think your cells become bigger? You would only be a giant cell. No, your cells duplicate and duplicate. Duplicate and die to remain the same size. Cells that duplicated and must die go through apoptosis(cell suicide) and are cancerous if they don't. So cell division would kill you, the tumor would grow indefinitely.

Cell division is so important because a single cell cannot do all the basic functions of the cell. The parent cell reproduces to form to daughter cells which make the cell work by division of labour in multi-cellular organisms.

As already mentioned, if it wasnt for division we wouldnt be alive. When the egg is conceived that i sone cell that keeps dividing, Stem Cells, until they specialize into other cells that also keep divind because older cells die. Also apart form older cells dieing we wouldnt be growing.

Meiosis cell division is for reproduction - sperm and egg.
Mitosis cell division is for growth - every other cell including muscle, skin, brain cells, etc.

Look at it from the basic view of the genes. When they replicate they will need a new vehicle to run around in; cells. Replication is it's own purpose at the ultimate level. Other people will give you the more proximate answers to this question.

cells do not live very long. If they did not replicate and divide, nothing or noone would live for very long. In fact, we would probably all still be amoebas! lol
