I got the backpack for free and it was already like that and my son really needs it for school. He starts tomorrow (1/16/07). I do have a sewing machine.

It depends on what kind of zipper it is. If its one of those ones with nylon loops for teeth (most of them these days) they are self-healing. Keep playing with it (good activity for while you're watching tv) and eventually it'll get lined back up. Don't pull on it really hard, just work it back and forth. Usually they get off track because there was too much in the pack.

If the zipper has actual teeth, you may be able to remove some stitches at one end of the zipper so that you can get the pull to go beyond the end of the zipper. Then you can line it up right and stitch the end of the zipper back together once its back on track. There is usually a little metal piece at one or both ends that keeps the zipper from going off that end. You can buy those things in fabric stores for pennies, so go ahead and take it off if you need to. One end or the other will lift with pliers, a nail file... anything you can get under it. You may be able to put it back on, but you can also put some stitches in across that end of the zipper to keep the zipper pull from going back off the end until you can get to a store to get a replacement.

You can definitely do this!

in case you have ever observed there's somewhat spring loaded button interior the loop the place the zipper tab is going by. once you pull he tab the two up or down it presses down in this button. The button acts like a locking mechanism to maintain zipper in place the place you go away it pulled as much as. Push it down with little screwdriver, and at same time pull on caught fabrics as you progression zipper up and down. you are able to choose a third hand to do this.

I fixed a zipper by spreading the slider a bit, putting everything back where it belonged, and gently squeezing the slider back to where the slit looked about right.

I have no idea. It's possible that you could, if you have enough time take it to the dry cleaners and let them fix it professionaly so it doesn't screw up.
