Straight Talk from the Heartland (Ed Schultz)
By the early 1990s he was hosting an arch-conservative radio talk show. As recently as 2000, Schultz was still cheerleading on the air for conservative candidates and causes, but he now describes himself as a "gun-toting, meat-eating, drug-free liberal from America's heartland". He says he had a change of heart, abandoning his conservative outlook after his girlfriend (now his wife), who worked in a Salvation Army soup kitchen, challenged him to stop by and actually meet some of "the bums" he had routinely castigated on his radio show.
A political pundit or talker who switches sides is a rarity, and as such Schultz is despised by some right-tilting listeners who see him as a traitor, and viewed with distrust by left-tilting listeners who doubt he can be trusted. Despite the "liberal" tag, Schultz's opinions are mostly middle-of-the-road. His program is cordial, not confrontational, rarely funny but never dull. He often takes his show on the road in his customized motor home, dubbed the Big Eddie Cruiser.

If you want an easy more of a intro to politics and economics I highly suggest picking up "healing our world" by Mary J. Ruwart
Theres no other political novel that I have read that I can acclaim as highly as that one. A definite eye opener.
It also lacks any partisan bias so it will appeal to you regardless of your political affiliations.

Personally I like the "Profiles of Courage" by the former assassinated President John Fitzgerald Kennedy
Or anything that Dr. King wrote, or Thomas Jefferson, or Winston Churchill, But the first one is my favorite.
