Opossums are generally total wimps UNLESS they are new mothers. Than they are crazy. They are very protective of there young. I really do not like them I think they are creepy looking.

It depends on where you are if your in Australia and it's a Possum as you have written it then no, they are total herbivores eating fruit flowers and leaves. They will only attack your pets in defence should they be provoked, but can do damage as they have a good set of claws on them, however they ( the possums) normally come off second best. The may freeze if a light is shone on them but they do not play dead.
If you are in the USA however and they are Opossums then most breeds are omnivores, preferring a diet of insects and already dead animals. These are the ones that play dead.

Oppossums will eat anything if they are starving. They really like to eat cat and dog food. They also like to eat bugs and spiders.

I used to have a ton of spiders when I moved into this house that had been empty for a year. I now have a couple of oppossums under the house and haven't seen a spider in a long time.

One thing I read up on though, is that they will kill chickens and eat them. I've fed my oppossums chicken bones and they did eat the bones.

I don't think they'd ever try to kill your animals unless they were absolutely starving to death. Let them eat some of your cat or dog food and everything will be fine.

I had a pet-sitting client who had 2 possums, and she is a retired veterinarian. Every evening, I was instructed to feed EACH of them:
1 boiled egg
1/2 can wet cat food
1/2 cup dry cat food
1/2 cup mixed frozen vegetables
1/2 apple, pear, or banana
2 pieces bread.
I couldn't believe what pigs they were! They were also VERY noisy eaters, with a lot of smacking, munching, and slurping.
They also needed to be fed separately because they would rip each other up to get at the others food.
Creepy little buggers!

Several years ago I shot a possum and 5 minutes later another possum came up and started eating on the first one! Ick! Make sure your pets have their shots!

I've eaten a lot of varmint, but couldn't get hungry enough to eat those sickly buggers thus far. I've skinned raccoon, and the greasy meat is a bit of a turn-off. I figure Possum would be similar.

Possums don't eat cats or dogs, unless maybe they find one already dead. They can bite and will defend themselves if they can't escape or if they don't faint from fright, which they are famous for doing.
They are nocturnal, so you shouldn't have a problem in the daytime.
I don't recommend feeding them; it only encourages them.
Still, they are beneficial. They eat snails and other bugs; they are said to eat baby rats. I am glad to have them in my yard; I have absolutely no snails, and not as many spiders as I would expect.

The possums in my backyard usually eat birdseeds and squirrel food.
They can also get into your trash - so I guess that they will eat about anything.
I have never heard of one killing another animal.
My cat stays away from it, but watchings it.

What Do Possims Eat

Opossums are general scavengers looking for trash or something already dead. Of course, all the rules of normal behavior go out the window when dealing with a rabid animal. If it hangs around a lot and doesn't act scared, I'd call Animal Control.
