I recently decided that I want to be a doctor because I enjoy helping people in significant ways and interacting with the community. I also plan to move to a relatively isolated part of Canada (3 hours from the United States border: well away from most of the population) because I grew up in contact with that culture and understand it very well on a personal basis. I am completing a degree in chemistry, will have done 2 years of volunteer work (4 hrs/wk or more) and 1 yr of shadowing. I am attempting to work as a paramedic, will publish a medical research paper, and have worked my way through college (20 hrs a wk) without financial assistance from my parents. There is a history of doctors in my family (one each generation for the last three). My MCAT score is a 13 in all sections and an S in the writing. However, I have a 3.14 gpa because of a single year of bad grades due to illness and personal problems. MY GPA in high school was 3.94.

I don't care about the top school: my family in canada and their neighbors need a local doctor BADLY. That's why I'm doing this.

It may be a struggle to get into a Med School with those scores. BUT, it is not out of the question. If you are asked about the scores in your interview or essay, highlight how you have improved yourself throughout your academic life, despite the obstacles that you have faced.

Good luck

I work for a graduate program in cali and we accept people with GPA's as low as 2.5 but mostly 3.0 and above. Just establish good relations with the Dean and Chair of the department you want to get into. You should stick with the least amount of classes possible if you are going to work at the same time. Be sure to get all of your applications filled out and apply to some safety schools. Try to take your exams early too and maybe try to take them twice, if possible in order to get a higher score. Trust me, the exams really do count! Good luck with everything.

Probably not into the top 25 medical schools - but there are medical schools for people with GPAs like yours.

Good Luck!!!

Believe me, you'll get in. Just make sure you send some applications to a few safety schools.
