I'm writing a novel set in the Victorian era. It's about a prostitute who falls in love with the inspector who had rescued her from a suicide attempt. The problem is, I can't figure out how she could end up falling in love with a man. The only fact I am aware of about a prostitute is that they are usually man-haters. But what else of their character? Are they all untrustworthy, unsensitive, loud, dishonest and such? (I'm sorry, but that was how this one prostitute I had once encountered acted like...but I KNOW not all are like her, that's why I'm asking for help). Or can they be sensitive, kind, and . . .trustworthy? But I'm sure most all of them don't trust other people. Anyways, my point is, tell me about how a prostitute's character might me.

Also, is it possible for a prostitute to fall in love? I mean, they've been treated so bad by men and all.....if they CAN fall in love, how?

Maybe she became a prostitute as a last resort. Have you read Les Mis? Fantine falls in love, or so it is persumed, with Jean Valjean after he rescues her. She was a prostitute but only as a way to live.
He rescues her from imprisonment and she falls in love with him...

I haven't read it, but it reminded me of the summary for The Dress Lodger.

Yes, a prostitute can fall in love. Definitely. I recently read Mustang Ranch, and it was very interesting to get the background and psychological aspects of professional prostitutes.

Sadly, the thing that struck me the most was the need for these ladies to be loved, not by a trick, no, but by another that often received money from the lady - some even had pimps while others acquired them. If you can check something like this out, may give you more to round out your character. Used money to "buy" love. It was also something they could control.

It is possible for her to fall in love especially if she is waiting to be "rescued". If she felt she was abused all her life (first by her parents, then by her clients) she is looking for somebody who sees a human being in her. Many prostututes are coming from dysfynctional families and willing to mistaken sympathy for love. This type of people are willinign to give a lot of love back in exchange for litally nothing, just a little sympathy.

Did you read "Moll Flanders" by Daniel Defoe? It's about a prostitute's life. It's an interesting book!
