I want to start a big community tank but not sure if my betta will cooroporate.. i'm thinking if I buy a small goldfish and leave it in for a day or so I will be able to tell how the betta acts and if it will be good with other fish.. or is there a way to tell by its behavior by itself?

I don't think a goldfish is your best bet for testing your betta's sociability, unless you choose one that has very short fins. Bettas CAN be good community fish, but not with fish with long, flowing fins, as those are usually mistaken by the betta as another male betta. Besides, goldfish are just so different from your standard community fish...

I would use a single fish of one of the types you're planning on mixing the betta with in the community tank (neons, rasboras, livebearers... no gouramis, other bettas, or nippers like danios/barbs/large tetras lest your betta become the target) and make sure that fish has plenty of room and/or plants to hide in if the betta is aggressive. And keep an eye on them so you can remove the fish if your betta is indeed a mean one. ;)

Good luck!

Goldfish are coldwater fish and bettas are tropical fish. Therefore, it's impossible to keep them together, because one or the other will not like the temperature of the tank.

However - bettas can be put with other tropical fish, so long as the other fish are passive and rather plain looking. If the other fish looks too much like a betta (such as very colorful and with long, flowing fins) then the betta will attack it. If the other fish is too aggressive, then it will attack the betta, because, with their slower movement and long fins, bettas are an excellent target for mean fish.

Granted, every betta has it's own personality. If your betta has been living on it's own for a long time now, it might not appreciate the new company. Be sure to keep an eye on your fish for a good long while if you do decide to put something else in with your betta.

Oh my gosh what is with all these questions today? Something must be in the air.

Bettas are tropical fish and goldfish are coldwater fish, so by keeping them together you are going to cause one or the other to suffer no matter what.

I'm going to copy this response so I can just paste it if anybody else asks a question like this, I have answered this type of question too many times today.

EDIT: Tetras, platys, guppies with short fins, basically anything with short fins will more than likely be safe. Just stay away from long-finned fish, gouramis because those most likely will be attacked. Avoid anything that would nip the betta's fins.

Anybody who claims that bettas kill everything in sight is full of something I can't say due to censorship. I have been breeding bettas for several years and I have kept them with many different kinds of fish.

Look at the thread of this forum. The responses are written by people who actually know what they are talking about. http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94078

try white clouds or rosey minnows. goldfish are usually not passive enough to get along with a betta. anything you put with a betta has to be willing to be dominated. goldfish do not fit in this category at all. you are better off just going with a school of tetras or rasboras and skipping the experimentation stage. a good community tank for a betta would include a school of tetras, danios, rasboras or white clouds and some corys and some ghost shrimp maybe throw in an african dwarf frog. if that isn't enough throw in a couple ballon mollys but don't expect them to be happy because they prefer brackish water.

not a good idea. basically purchase a 5 gallon tank for the betta for >$20.00. Bettas somewhat must be in a tank with a minimum of 10 gallons, as they are tropical fish that favor a heater. basically because puppy shops save them in cups(that's honestly cruel with information from the way) does not propose you should to. you could attempt it, however the mass ammonia produced with information from the Goldfish will kill the betta, or the betta will kill the goldfish. desire I helped. solid success

Trust me, you do not want to put any colorful fish with a betta ( although giving your male betta a wife of almost the same color works ). I tried putting goldfish in the tank and the next morning, all of my goldfish were floating dead except the betta!!!

Well not male bettas will get a long good with others!, they will fight(thats why they are also called:siamese fighting fish) but if the other fish are bigger than the betta they will start the fight!! female bettas usually dont fight and if they dont start a fight then if you have a mean fish in the same tank it will pick on the betta cuz it is so small!!
I would research!

Every betta I have ever owned has killed any goldfish that was put with it, no matter the size difference.

No! Never put any other fish in with goldfish. They have different water quality and water temperature requirements. Goldfish are NOT community fish. NO GOLDFISH!

No, not only will the beta kill the goldfish but this can stress the beta and stress can often kill fish of any kind.
