Big picture planning is stepping back and taking the time to see everything that is required to accomplish the goal. Then design your plan based on the information you have gathered.

Not related, but sort of related, and I will use a military term here, is battle planning. This takes into account the big picture and it also takes into account that things do not always go to plan. So what are my back up plans. Say you were going to have a guest speaker and for one reason or another, he did not show up. What would you do?

My guess would be the outcome of what you want to get done. Then break that down into groups of what can be done to earn the big picture.

Ex: Make a cake is my big picture.

To get there I need to:

1. make sure I have all the ingredience together.
2. preheat the stove.
3 mix the ingredience together
4 cook the cake for the proper time.
5. frost the cake.
6: big picture: I got the cake.
