Try Ghost Shrimp, they are inexpensive and amazing to watch. They are transparent so you can even see what they eat. We have two Beta's in a 2 gallon with a separator and the Ghost Shrimp did just fine. You don't need any special food, they just eat whatever the Beta's don't. Try Walmart, you can probably get them for 25 cents each.

Good luck

Tetras, platys, guppies with short fins, basically anything with short fins will more than likely be safe. Just stay away from long-finned fish, gouramis because those most likely will be attacked. Avoid anything that would nip the betta's fins.

Anybody who claims that bettas kill everything in sight is full of something I can't say due to censorship. I have been breeding bettas for several years and I have kept them with many different kinds of fish. Look at the thread of this forum. The responses are written by people who actually know what they are talking about. http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94078

EDIT: I just saw the size of your tank. In a 5 gallon tank there are no fish that can go with a betta without overstocking the tank. Ghost shrimp, african dwarf frogs, and mystery snails will make great tankmates and great scavengers.

There are lots of fish that can live happily with bettas -- IF they have enough room. And a 5 gallon tank is just too small. It's not so much about aggression as just living space. They will be overcrowded, which could lead to fighting but also to diseases, infections, and shortened lifespans, not to mention extra work for you in keeping their water clean with so many bodies in there to foul it up.

Why don't you let your betta have his space and save your money for a bigger tank? :)

We had plecostomus, large snails, & aquatic frogs. My betta would still attempt to assault them, but they had been massive sufficient that they weren't broken. I attempted neon tetras, ghost shrimp, & white cloud minnows on account that I read that they might be suitable, but he wolfed them all--it used to be like a bloodbath with him swimming around with body materials putting out of him mouth. I've read that corydoras catfish are good with bettas, however I by no means tried them. They're education fish so if you happen to opt for them you must get 3-4.

Depends if it is a male or female. Female bettas can go with butterfly loaches aka hillstream loaches (I've heard), ghost shrimp, snails( but just get one, more and they probably will breed) and dwarf african frogs. Someone I know has their male betta in a five gallon with 2 dwarf african frogs, and they seem fine. Males can also be kept with ghost shrimp and snails.
Hope This Helps!!!!! :)

Most kinds that don't have long fins that a betta can nip at. Also avoid any type of other gourami...they will attack the betta. Betta should be good as long as the other fish aren't too small.

We had plecostomus, great snails, & aquatic frogs. My betta could nonetheless attempt to attack them, yet they have been sufficiently huge that they weren't broken. i attempted neon tetras, ghost shrimp, & white cloud minnows simply by fact I study that they could be properly suited, yet he wolfed all of them--it exchange into like a bloodbath with him swimming around with physique aspects spectacular out of him mouth. i've got study that corydoras catfish are sturdy with bettas, yet I never tried them. they are training fish so in case you come to a decision on them you will desire to get 3-4.

Betas are solitary fish. They will even fight their own kind.
Makes me wonder how they mate if they can''t stand to be around
one another. Put your Beta in it's own bowl and put other fish in the tank. There are plants that you can grow in the bowl which will feed the Beta. Ask at the pet store.

None....not even another Beta. They need to be housed by themselves.
