Oh, come on. Yes, it was wrong that he was ever a member of that sick group, but he renounced that group about 60 years ago. People change. Senate president pro-tempore is not an official position, and all he does is preside over the Senate. He does not have tie-breaking power, or anything like that.

That position has historically gone to the longest serving member of the majority party, so I'm sure there are a few others which you'd be unhappy with, too.

I think it's also a shame that former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist sat on the Senate Committee on Finance & Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. Bill Frist is a licensed brain surgeon, who probably belongs to a practice which grossly overcharges it's clients. Why should he have been on that committee?

[ADDED] Should we hate the Pope, too? He used to be one of the "Hitler Youth". People CAN change.

Isn't it great that on this MLK holiday that even an ex-kkk member can be forgiven and see the err of his ways.
So as you in your question try to divide and invoke anger, remember some of Dr. Kings words.
Loving Your Enemies.
by Martin Luther King, Jr.
First, we must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. Forgiveness does not mean ignoring what has been done or putting a false label on an evil act. It means, rather, that the evil act no longer remains as a barrier to the relationship. Forgiveness is a catalyst creating the atmosphere necessary for a fresh start and a new beginning. This simply means that there is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies. When we look beneath the surface, beneath. the impulsive evil deed, we see within our enemy-neighbor a measure of goodness and know that the viciousness and evilness of his acts are not quite representative of all that he is. We see him in a new light. We recognize that his hate grows out of fear, pride, ignorance, prejudice, and misunderstanding, but in spite of this, we know God's image is ineffably etched in being. Then we love our enemies by realizing that they are not totally bad and that they are not beyond the reach of God's redemptive love.

NO its not.Strom Thurmond of South Carolina changed and so can he.What? your racist ?you don't like Caucasians?you think maybe they don't have rights. ?they cant make it in this world unless they all go by exactly the way YOU think? It takes all kinds. people elect him.. then don't vote for them.but your racist is what I think. towards Caucasians. if you don't like them so darn what.?but you have your opinion and I have mine.your not to judge people. you have a soul and you need to protect it.because once you try to judge a persons heart with out knowing that person then your going the wrong way.
I painted the entire church property of an all black church across the street from my home.for free , took months. huge garage. house, church. everything.and flew my Confederate flag on the State Confederate memorial day and a black man burned my home down. I took the old black lady next door. for 18 years every month to pay Bill.s every two weeks to get grocery's, no pay.I wouldn't take it.I took in a black neighbour man who had his home taken and helped him for two months free, paid his grocery's and even cigs. and got him a job.and someone judged me.and burned my home down. without knowing me..and by the way where I come from when you shorten a persons name that's disrespectful. Its shouldnt be just MLK.he reminded me of Gandhi
