Because we need to provide a safety net for those who are not able to provide for themselves. There is a small minority of people who really don't belong on the streets or they need support because they are mentally incapable of providing for themselves. There is another group who need temporary help to get back on their feet. Unfortunately our welfare program pays for yet another group who are able bodied people and choose not to provide for themselves and live off of us instead. Those are the people we should target to not receive welfare and force them off welfare. We should care for and be compassionate for the former and despise that latter.

Ultimately it must be the consumers responsibility due the mechanics of supply and demand. If the consumer demanded higher welfare and boycotted meat that was not reared to this standard then it would no longer be produced. However, it's very easy to make the right decision re: ethically sourced meat when you have a small holding in Dorset and your own TV series. I would never darken a supermarket's doors again I've I lived like you Hugh, why would I need to? However, when you live on a council estate in one of the most deprived areas of the country and you're the only one working in your household as your partners lost his job due to the recession, it's a bit more difficult to choose the £8 free range chicken from the butchers over the £3 one from the supermarket. I do try to take the high road and go to my butcher and whatever I buy I never throw any of it away, it's all used in stews and soups and frozen if I can't think what to do with it (even the bones for stock) but when I've got £30 to live on a week and a winter gas bill coming up it's not so cut and dried as "Is animal welfare my responsibility' and unfortunately a £3 chicken will feed us for 3-4 days the same as an £8 one will.

Awww... but those welfare recipients are NEEDY, didn't you know? You, however, are classified as a selfish, non-caring #*&(! for wanting to keep the $$ that you work hard for. I mean, really... what would you do with that extra money if they let YOU control it? Give some to charity? Start a retirement account? Leave bigger tips when you go out to dinner? Spend more so the companies had a need to hire more people? Actually be able to afford a decent home/car?
If only others shared our views...
Don't get me wrong - the welfare system is a good thing. It's necessary at times, and could be a good thing. You never know when you'll need some help. But this never-ending check system? Gotta go. Limit the time spent, and stop increasing when a recipient has another kid. If you can't afford to feed the ones you've got, don't have anymore.
And yes, I've been there. Collected when I was a teenage mom. But got off my ***, got married, got a job, and we now support OURSELVES (and the non contributing members of society).

If u will do a study u will find out that MOST welfare rec. do work and contribute or have in the past. Figure this: make $8 an hour (here it's 5.15), after taxes. Pay $300 or more weekly for daycare, rent, utilities, etc. and pay for your medicine and your childs shots, sickness, etc.. My son's therapy cost $600 a month.. my meds were $1500 a month.. do u see a problem.. I was REALLY abusing the system.. I hope one day these people who LOVE to judge, lose their job, home, health insurance etc and NEED to be on welfare... then they will hear this "lazy, bum..don't want to work.. I don't want to take care of u..".. and I have to let u know that If there were any other way, MOST welfare rec. would go that route. The hassle I must go thru to get $30 in food stamps every month is pathetic... (I disabled) and it's so true that welfare rec. are treated like "aliens".. The sad part is.. An illegal alien of 1 can now get more food stamps than I got for a family of 2 and I paid taxes on my earnings to pay for my welfare..

If a woman has a child. And that child is being beaten by her drunken father or molested by him. Would you do what it took to get that child away from him and into a safe home with a secure future?
That's why you should care! There are women who have had to turn to welfare because the man they have married as become abusive or started molesting their children. If it had not been for welfare, then the children may still have been in that home, subjected to the terrible life.
You can't pass judgment on ALL welfare people. Sure there are some who are taking advantage of the system. But then there are some who would not be alive today without it.

Okay, hold on there. Now, I'll be the first to agree with you about the trash who abuse the welfare system. That's one of my biggest pet peeves. However, I' ve known people who have had no choice but to go on the system for a few months. And those same situations could just as easily happen to you.The welfare system was created to give people a helping hand. There will always be a bunch of lazy assholes who will try to leech off public assistance programs. That's why they are improving the screening processes.Your prejudicial attitude is shameful, and one could only wonder how you must be in other areas of your life.*Just as an interesting statistic for you: Former welfare recipients ,9 times out of 10, go on to jobs that the taxes from that job repay the system some 5 times over.Just thought you should know.*

I don't know.. That's for you to decide..
I care about it because I love my country and all it's citizen's.. It's meant to help people get back on their feet through hard times. Not everybody has the silver spoon you do.. It's hard for some just to get by. The welfare system may not be perfect but it's a very small spend through taxes that signaficantly helps certain people.
If people want to take advantage of it and stay exactly where they are in life.. That's their decision to make, it'll help the people that do want to make something with their life with less competition for success..

Well, first of all, it's "epitome"
Why aren't you proud to live in a country that is so caring that we give money to the less fortunate.
And who says they are non-contributing? More often than not, people on welfare also have a job, and they are paying taxes through that.
Also, welfare is good for the economy. The more people buying stuff, the more taxes they are giving, the more businesses make, the more taxes the businesses pay, etc. etc., etc. The higher property values are, the more taxes are paid.
If we stopped giving out welfare checks our economy would take a SERIOUS hit.
You shouldn't judge so harshly. Someday you might find yourself in a situation where your only option is to receive charity from someone.
I pray you will find Jesus.

I don't think they can all be judged as a whole. I volunteer in the community and see the situations. Some people are born into this kind of lifestyle and can't seem to get out, some have had really bad breaks in life and are not there because they want to be and some are just plain lazy/no good. You have to be open to see the whole picture and not generalize.

Little One, I felt as you did until : My eldest daughter got cancer three times, before the age of six years. On her second bought I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. Two years later, my husband was Diagnosed with Liver Cancer. Four years later I was Diagnosed with MS. Now you tell me what a person is to do with this?
Oh, and by the way, after several brain surgeries my eldest son died of brain cancer! I think you need to sit down and have a reality check!
Life may be great now, but at one time my private insurance canceled me out! Can you please tell me how a person is to pay for something like this? I pay taxes, I pay taxes and I pay taxes! If I need help from my Government you better believe your skinny little behind that I am going ask for it!
Now, on to a more interesting question!

There is a very fine line from being well-to-do, living as a family of 4 in a large house with 2 cars, a boat, vacation cottage, and money to do about anything you want to do... and living underneath a bridge as a homeless family of 3...
all it takes is to be in debt, and have the breadwinner of the family die without good enough insurance to cover expenses until the other adult can get an education and a good job...
it is easy to lose a job, your house, your car, everything in a matter of a year...
Now, take a family of 4 with no income (don't judge too quickly about lazyness).. would you have them stealing to make ends meet or would you be loving and help them if you could?...
a person with no education turns to crime more often than someone with a good education and a good job...
The USA paid GI Bill benefits to returning soldiers after WWII so they could go to college and get an education.. with all of the money we paid out.. we have collect many times that in taxes from their increased income, their children's greater education and greater income.. and our country has developed a better education base than previously...
If you don't want to help them now, then possibly you would prefer to support the jails (where you not only support the person but also the guards).
Edit: OK, I added my "thumb down" after you called us names. Before that I thought you just did not understand.. but now I think you don't care.
