In his time, Michelangelo, painter and sculptor.

Da Vinci spread his great talents into other areas (inventions, the sciences such as anatomy, etc) and was unable to dedicate his full time to the arts, as Michelangelo, who was Da Vinci's younger contemporary and not only left us his great paintings (The Last Judgment on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, designs of the dome of St Peter's Basilica) but his sculptures, as well (David, La Pieta... )

But, there were others later who were about as great: Rembrandt, el Greco, Peter Paul Rubens, etc.

The relative fame of a person can not be a matter of opinion. The fame of a person is directly related to how many people know of that person. Even if their is no reliable way for us to determine who is indeed the most famous person that does not change the fact that there is a specific answer. So who is the most famous artist is a matter of fact even if we can only guess what the true answer to that question is.

DaVinci, Michelangelo and Picasso - the names that pretty much everybody knows and who had the greatest influences in art. If to choose one, then DaVinci.
