Since 9/11 the US has almost reverted to a kind of pre-WWI isolationism-except that we enforce our view on foreign countries. I have wanted to travel abroad for some time (Western Europe,UK, etc). Will I encounter open hostility towards Americans? We're not all pompous, arrogant bullies!Help..

Shall I re- phrase for illiterate, knee-jerk reactionists? Please point out where I said I HATE this country. Thankfully this country was set up with the specific purpose of allowing me to disagree with my governent and not vanish in the night. Blindly following simply because of what you construe as patriotism is just the opposite. I served my country voluntarily for 7 years and I feel that at least earns me the right to speak out against what I consider to be a dim, misguided,self-serving administration.I love my country and would fight for it again, however I would not pee on "W" were he to spontaneously ignite...

Listen...British people are accepting of everybody aslong as you are open-minded and fair. But I warn you **WARNING** Once you leave the US of @ss you may NOT want to return.
You will see a whole way of living commonly referred to as 'Socialism' That's a very bad word in the US. It means the government look after you if you need them. Free health care and no begging at churches for example. I lived in the US and I think you should take my advice.....LEAVE! If you are truly open-minded RUN! Leave the THIRD REICH TAKEOVER there!
750.000, 3/4 of a million Americans live in Britain now...You're welcome and will be welcomed....trust me.

The Americans do at least have a foreign policy. My one worry is that the Liberals in American may want to return to the isolationism of the past. Hope this is not the case.
The American people are not arrogant bullies but Geo.W.Bush apparently is and so too are many who support him. This from a man who hid away in the National Guard so as to avoid military service in Vietnam.
On the whole and because of Geo.W.Bush, most Brits now think we should pull out of Iraq and stay well away from further US military adventures. This is probably how it's going to be. Blair is not sending any more troops to Iraq - do not think we have any to spare anyway. His reason for not wanting to do so is the massive backlash he will face here in UK if he does.
On the Parliament channel here in UK yesterday, I saw the Chair of the Senate (a lady Senator) tell us that "we, America, are now alone". Well I know the feeling, we had to face it back in 1940.
The Brits will still do trade, buy your goods, but they will no longer be just a poodle.
Please note that the British Army is now about the same size it was in c1800. We do not need a big army.

You will have the "burden" of being an American no matter where you go. I disagree with your assertion that we are "isolationists." We have not been that way for a long time. We were often criticized for it, I might add. We don't invade everytime there's a firefight or innocent civilians are murdered, but we are far more active now than we were before WWI. If we fail to act, or invade and get the bad guys, we are criticized for acting only in our own selfish interests. If we do act, remove a dictator or two, restore or initiate democratic governments, we are criticized for being overzealous and acting for our own selfish interests! It's a conundrum. Just be respectful of your hosts, and try to learn a phrase or two in the native language of the region you are traveling to. Most people are decent, so you won't run into any problems. We still have more fans out there than enemies in most places (except the Middle East...but they don't like anyone that isn't ready to be assimilated into the fundamentalist Islamic world of terrorism and such).

Western Europe could be destroyed in a heart beat if they sided with the US. They have an influx of Muslims that could turn on them in nothing flat. The french especially know we have a problem, but who wants them. They instilled a free liberal open immigration policy from their former colonies into France that is destructive. But the Parisienne hate everyone, Americans, Germans and french folk from the sorrounding areas also. How you survive in Europe, do as the Romans do...I have travelled Europe for the past 20 years learn to go with the flow, don't visit McDonalds or KFC. If you are ashamed of this president now, the one before was a drunk and womanizer, were you ashamed of him also? He turned our White House into a whore house. I think President Bush although not popular is doing a great job, did you forget 9-11?. His approval back then was 80-90%. And every American wanted revenge. We are now taking out the insurgents, and is this the wrong approach?, was Saddam to stay in power and kill more people?, weapons of mass destruction where found, the media kept it quiet. Clowns that don't understand foreign policy need to understand we are not perfect but we will not sit on our butts and get attacked. Iraq could pay our expenses in the war though.

I am so much older than most of you on here and yes our foreign policy is pretty bad right now...but you can travel and enjoy it.
I have spent 8 hr layovers in Amsterdam and talked to ones in the airport the whole time over coffee and meals with Romanians, ones from Bulgaria, then went to my home base overseas in Athens, Greece. Its a learning experience, we discuss views and issues....not hostility. About the only polictical question I get the most though is why did the Americans put Bush back in 2 times. But not in a harsh manner, just in asking.
I never felt threatened in those 2 places I went to and I go to Greece every year to visit relatives of relatives. Enjoy travel, you'll learn

Well... I'm ashamed of you blabbing your shame to the world. First of all, I talk with people from all over the world all the time and I find that there is respect for Americans and what we are doing that is shared privately. Also, the French, Russians and many within the UN are absolutely corrupt and were taking money from Iraq. The oil for food program is a perfect example. They didn't get Kofi Anan for this, but they were able to indict his son. The pompous arrogance is not the Americans, that title belongs to other nations like France who talked the talk, but when it came down to it, they became traitors. We are fighting a very vicious fight against people who want you dead because you do not believe as they do. 9/11 is one of the results. Until you and others realize this, its going to be a long haul.

You poor mistreated child! It's so sad that you have to sit home on your nice pc getting fed three meals a day going to a great school or did. You have heat in the winter air conditioner in the summer. You can drive from one end of the U.S. without having to show your papers. this war on terror hasn't effected you one bit. You have been kept safe because of our presidents forign policy. We are so spoiled as a nation we have to cry and whine about something all the time. No wonder people in other countries look down on us. Spoiled brat!!

Easy answer to an easy question:
Move and apply for citizenship elsewhere, cowardous traitor!
Seriously, it's funny (and tragic at the same time) that people like you think that the USA was ever loved by outsiders since about 1950. Nobody hated us when terrorist were attacking us over and over and over again through the 70s 80s and 90s right? It wasn't until a Republican, George Bush upset the sitting VP for the oval office that America began being hated, right?
Wake up you imbecile! America is, and always will be hated, as long as we are the most powerful country in the world. The sooner you realize this, the sooner you'll figure out what is going on here.

Please do all us a favor and go.
Enjoy yourself. Stroll on the beaches, tour the museums and bash your fellow Americans into the dirt.
If you have a really grand time stay where ever you ended up.
Embrace those rights being an American gives you. While you are there - maybe you will get some insight into why everyone outside of the United States wants to move here.
