I read Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt when I was in high school, i thought it was a really good book.
Also, I recommend you Paulo Coelho, he's a Brazilian author, start with The Alchemist, after that you'll be eager to read all his books.

Vikram Seth. His famous novel is And Unsuitable Boy. Really good. He is Indian, bt has a universality about him so you can't really categorise him narrowly as a South Indian writer.
