Does anyone understand what I'm talking about? You usually have two choices:

[Random Title X- Complete Show - 6 discs, region 1, - $60.00]

OR

[Random Title X Complete Show, 3 discs, region 0, import, - $19.00]

These cheaper sets often have different covers, etc.

So what specifically is the downside of buying them? If there is no downside, why would anyone buy the more expensive ones?

Please be specific about what the differences is if you can. Thanks.

Random Title X Complete Show, 3 Discs, Region 0, Import = 100% chance a bootleg, which is the worst possible thing a true anime fan can buy. It's putting money in the hands of criminals. It would have terrible quality in both audio and picture. Your merely getting a cheap knockoff with bad audio, visual and it would make you look bad in the eyes of other anime fans.

Random Title X Complete Show, 6 Discs, Region 1 = 100% chance it's an official product, not bootleg. It would have better quality and video than a bootleg. This random title, region 1, 6 disc complete show would support the North American anime industry.

Companies, such as ADV, Geneon and Funimation to name a few had to PAY money to bring these anime to our shores so we can watch them. Now, if you buy a bootleg, that money goes where? Not to those companies who worked hard. What happens once the North American licensors go out of business? The anime industry would collapse, which essentially, would mean the end of Naruto, Bleach and other animes airing on TV because some stupid kids bought bootlegs or downloaded.

I deal with cases like this everyday where I work. It's strongly believed by many respectable anime fans that if you can't buy the real deal, you shouldn't be an anime fan. Your like the bootleg, a fake.

Which would you prefer...

Putting money into criminals
or
Supporting the North American licensors by buying their anime

That choice is yours. I've made my argument.

Well the downside just might be that you wont get the extra features that official DVD sets give you as well as bigger options (only get a choice of subtitle and sometimes dubbed or in original japanese). And if you're really unlucky. The discs were horrible copied and you end up getting duds. I had this happen to me once along with cheaply korean imported anime OSTs. Since then, i never buy em like that again. The big price is worth it officially.

I believe six disc options come out before the three disc sets. If you you really, really want that series you'll buy them on the original release and make the seller more money.
Six discs sets may also have extras, while the three disc versions are usually just the bare episodes.
Buy the three discs.
