Which engine do you have . Makes a big difference. You could have a 2.2L or a 2.4L. Labor on a 2.2L is 1.2hrs, Labor on a 2.4L is 6.3hrs. Water pump would be $50 to $100, depending on where they get it. As far as a flush, it is just a way to add to the bill. When a water pump is removed, most all the coolant is lost from the engine. If they remove the lower hose from the radiator or open the drain on the radiator all the coolant is drained from the radiator. Tell them to just fill it back up with new coolant.

It sounds to me, by your description, that your water pump is leaking. The fact that the water that's leaking is brown, means that there's rust in the cooling system. Hopefully, the cooling system doesn't have any other damage. The correct repair at this point would be to replace the water pump, replace hoses as needed, replace the thermostat and flush the cooling system. All that work could cost as much as 450-500. Have the shop list on paper everything that they intend to do to the car and what are the warranties they offer on the parts and labor. Then, if you want, post the question again with the additional information.

I'll do it for a 12 pack of beer and dinner......but if not the price is reasonable......the flush is not needed all the water and stuff will mostly be flushed out when they take out the water pump...it's not a dire need....just make sure you keep up on the antifreeze....it helps with the rust problem....as for the hoses....there are only 2....since it's a 98 I doubt they need replacing..but you should if they feel spongy or have cracking and if they are hard they are fine.

$250 sounds like a fair price. They're a 90k replacement item. Pay them to replace the hoses and flush the radiator. You DONT want your cooling system to fail, then you'd be looking at a new car.

Go to the hospital now. With my first and second child(8years apart!) I only had a trickle of amniotic fluid coming out for a couple hours. It was only when the I got to the hospital did my water break on it's own BOTH times. Sound like you're going to be a mommy VERY soon! Congrats!

the price for replacing the water pump sounds reasonable. It shouldn't cost more than $75 to get the radiator flushed.
