A graphics update is required probably along with a change in operating systems if your not using windows xp. Go to your computers website and download all your drivers.

It sounds like your computer is lacking the proper driver for your video card, resulting in default graphics (640x480 resolution, 4bit color). Depending on which version of Windows you are using, you should be able to obtain the name/model of your video hardware via the display properties section of the control panel. You would then need to download the corresponding driver from Intel, Nvidia, or ATI's websites. This will solve the problem enabling higher resolutions and higher color depth.

If you can post further info about your computer (Brand/Model/Service Tag) or if a custom build open the machine and write down the info from the actual video card I can further determine what driver is missing.

Up grade the graphic driver.
