I have always heard rest areas were not safe.

I prefer stopping at a gas station. It's so much safer and usually cleaner.

Try to stop at a large truckstop. They are well lit, plenty of (mostly clean) restrooms, (usually) good food and coffee, and if you're so inclined, hookers! As a biker I prefer stopping at the larger stops instead of the rest areas. Rest areas have no food or coffee, no place to warm up, and sometimes, like near San Diego, homeless people squat there. Having said that, I've stopped at many a safe, clean rest stop in my many years of riding. The ones in Arizona and New Mexico are usually nice. Basically my fatigue and bladder will be the ultimate judge. Try to never travel alone--a buddy can watch your back.

Gas Station...they have a lot more snacks to choose from. You can usually spot a clean one if that really matters that much to you, like BP is usually good.

I had a joke with my friends because we drove to Texas from Indiana and one of our parents said not to stop at Rest Areas because people get attacked at them (we really didn't think we would get attacked) so we made fun of it and called them "Rape Areas" the whole time- but maybe that would be a concern for some.

I prefer rest stops as they are cleaner! Being female, I would stop in the daylight when others cars & semi's are coming & going. If at night & alone, then I go to a gas station, preferably one that has am/pm mini store, as they tend to keep them cleaner.

Rest areas. I have never felt unsafe at a rest area.

I prefer nature. If I can walk around and find some trees it's more pleasant. But, sometimes the grass gets itchy on the tip when I stretch out the one-eyed monster.

Neither one, I would just rather find a spot to pull over and cop a squat
