On the back (reverse) of the penny are maple leaves. The maple leaf had started to be symbolically Canadian from French colonial times, the sugar maple being a common tree of southern Quebec. The poem "The Maple Leaf Forever" solidified its claim to be a national symbol. On the front (obverse) of the penny is a portrait of the reigning monarch, currently Elizabeth II. The inscription "D. G. Regina" is "Dei Gratia Regina" a Latin motto meaning "By the grace of God, Queen".

Hope this helps.

the canadian penny which represents the Maple leaf is the symbol of Canada. The Maple Leaf or tree origially comes from Canadian Maple Syrup. Which is what the first nations people invented. Canadian Maple Syrup.
Maybe that's why the canadian penny represnets the symbolism of the maple leaf.
