The way to do is is the same way that the manufacturers do it, only charge you more than it is worth. PURE RUBBING ALCOHOL. Put it into a $1.00 Dollar General special spray bottle and spray it very liberal on the glass. The alcohol will eat through the ice, depending on how think that it is, between 2-5 minutes. Also, place a full bottle of alcohol with your washer fluid. It will help it from freezing so therefore it will help as well. Also, just as a tip, if you can, raise your wipers off of your windshield EVERYTIME that you stop for more than 1 hour.

There is stuff you can spray on your windshield to remove ice but it's only really effective if the ice isn't really thick. Otherwise, really the only very effective thing you can do is just warm your car up. Once the defrost heats up and has ran for a bit, it's a lot easier to scrape the windows.

Here where we only have ice every once in a while and the temp doesn't get below 25 degrees, we can safely poor COLD water on our windshield and it won't crack. Hot water will make the glass crack. Poor the cold water on, also crank your car a few minutes before you plan to leave and turn on the defrost on a medium setting and with a medium temp, that should help.

I always start my car and let it run for about 30 min. with the heat on high defrost and the rear window defogger on. Saves on the scraping and nerves.

I used hot water on my side mirrors. Not too hot though. Best to let the car defroster do it. Have to get up earlier.

Get deicer from an autoparts store. I think it's alcohol based, so it doesn't freeze.
