Is there a standard or general rule of thumb for the spacing of recessed lights? My room is 10x20, and has a ceiling fan with light directly in the center of the room. I'm keeping the fan and light. I'd like to add recessed lights but need to know -
1) How many should I install?
2) How far apart from each other should they be?
3) How far from the wall should they be?
4) What size dia. & wattage should I use?

My suggestion would be 4. 30 inches out off of 20' wall x 24 inches out off of 10' wall. That would give you the light off the fan kit to illuminate the middle of the room making the recessed lights mainly decorative but also functional to light up the corners. I would also recommend a standard can that you can purchase at any home improvement store. 6" is industry standard with a 65 R 30 lamp. I have been an electrician for 23 years. Good Luck!

most of those answer will depend on your preference of lighting.

We are pretty much gutting out house and along with some of the changes we're adding in recess lighting to the family room and dinning room. The family room is a little bigger then your room, being 10x30.

The final layout for our room will place the lighting about 2' from the wall and spaced about 4' apart. Ill have to check what size were using but its about 2" dia or so if I remember right. Also putting in a dimmer switch and wiring in parallel instead of series.

I've done a lot of lighting design and regarding the dimensions you've stated here's a recommendation:

Place (4) 4" can lights 24" from each corner
Place (2) 4" can lights 24" from the wall along the 20' wall
Use 40-50 watt incandescent bulbs (I like natural color) and wire through a dimmer.

Hello so what is the rule of thumb of the dimensions of installing recessed lighting in a room? How far apart? How far off the wall? Calculations?? as well as how much lighting is required from a residential and commercial standpoint?

1) 4 - 6 depending on how bright you want it.
2) Min. 3' and max. 8' apart
3) Depends on if you want wall washers or straigth down lighting, but 3' roughly
4) Most are 5" diameter and 75 watt, but they make smaller dia. too, which given your room is narrow and long might look better.
