I've found that, when invaded, if I put one paw on their shoulder and sort of stiffen the arm, it frequently gets the message across. Sometimes you have to explain it, but I've never had to do it twice.

I never do it. I try and be conscious of personal space when I talk with people.
It always seems to be the rude loud ones that do what you describe.
It's a strength of wills sort of thing. When someone wants to stress a point or get our attention they use this as a means of gaining attention. It is negative and it is unnerving.

I hate that too. I have a rather large personal space and unless I really like the person I don't like to be crowded.

apparently for some cultures they cant help getting close to someone else as they speak...it can be a bit unnerving
