Lately, the following has been happening to my computer: it randomly freezes up for about 10 seconds and then allows me to continue (happens off and on while I'm using it), I hear a low buzzing/roar, and sometimes my computer won't shut down on it's own.

Not sure if these details are enough to say for sure, but anyone know if this might be a processor problem? It's a Dell desktop and is about 5 years old. The fans are clear of dust and appear to be working fine. Just wondering if I need to start thinking about getting a new one or whether this one can be salvaged.

Before you go get a new processor since they can be expensive. Try to defagment your hard drive. This might help it always does for me. Also depending on your computer usage it should be done about once every 6 months or more if you are really active on your pc.

Processors tend to be an all or nothing thing. If they fail, they fail big time. If they overheat they usually shut down the system as a protective measure.

It could be a hardware or software issue tho... I had a system that had a failing cd rom which would disappear and reappear without warning But my bet is that this is a software problem. Your windows installation may have become so clogged and bloated that nothing is working up to snuff. You may want to consider copying all of your files, photos, favorites, mp3 etc to CD's because if your hard drive is failing they could all be lost in the near future.

Consider using your Dell restore CD's to take your computer back to its out of the box state. This may solve your problem.
