It's technically a memoir or perhaps an autobiography. I think though that Wiesel wanted it to be classified as a novel when he published it. When you look for it in the store it's in the (auto)biography section and in the library it'd definitely be in the nonfiction section, sometimes the biography. It's definitely not a novel because that implies fiction and it's a true story.

Memoir. Basically, it's a novel. It's 100-some pages, so it can't be a short story.

It's a very short memoir. It's shorter than your average novel. I'm currently reading it now, it has less than 150 pages.

Initially it came out as a memoir then he classified it as a novel. THe new version is also slightly different then the first.... translated by his wife this time.
