Serious replies only with gerontology and psychology background. Will not hesitate to report abuse! I work in an elderly facility. One gentleman's behavior puzzles me. He's lucid. He defecates on his adult diaper instead of asking help to go to the washroom. Why?

Does he have any visitors? I once worked in a nursing home as a volunteer and one lady who was particularly lonely did that allot.

Some nursing homes set up programs to encourage scouts and other groups to visit. There are also groups that have dogs that are sort of like seeing eye dogs but they comfort the sick and the elderly.
One of these programs may help the people in your care, maybe even the gentleman that you are worried about.

Maybe he doesn't want to be reliant on others? Maybe someone in the facility is getting angry that he requires their help and he feels guilty? He's trying to not be a bother. I don't believe it's for attention. If he wanted attention, he would ask for help every time he needed to go to the washroom AND when he really didn't need to go.

same reason that teenagers seek attention - boredom.
I'd suggest finding a new hobby for him, but that is hard in a retirement home.

maybe find another dude who needs attention, tell each of them both that the other one called him *******
