He was seeking the Northwest Passage but neveer found it. As far as who he could be "related" to in todays world, perhaps those who seek to climb the highest mountains, such as Everest. Always looking for a better way to the top. There are few "last frontiers" to explore in today's world.

I'm not sure if he ever reproduced legitimately, or if he had siblings. If so he is likely related to someone.
