Economics. A winning coach at the college or pro level can sell out a 60,000 seat stadium at $120 a pop on average, plus local and national media contracts worth millions. Not to mention the brand building they do for a team that equals advertising revenue and merchandise sales nationwide.
You can't really blame the coach, teams or sports, but the millions who value football over the more important things in life. (Which I admit, at times, am one of them.)
It just goes along with a larger trend where we in society value entertainment above all else.

It makes perfect sense. Leverage. Football coaches get more money because they're involved with something more largescale. Although the value of a human life may seem more important than football to a person's mind, the true measure of payment isn't in what is more important, but what pulls in the most money itself. People want to see football, they pay tickets to see it. Many people do and many people are capitalizing from that truth. While many doctors do take fiscal advantage of the fact that people will pay anything to save someone they care about, it's not what pulls in the most money at the end of the day.

Supply and demand. People will pay a lot more to see football than to get nursing, so a football coach brings in a lot more money than a nurse or teacher. And there aren't that many good football coaches who can bring in the money. As such, with demand high and supply low, they get paid more.

it's stupid, people who are so intellectually driven, people who spend much of their life giving back not only to society but to the environment and the world, people who spend years of their lives studying and researching don't make nearly as much as some of the teen stars like Hilary Duff who get by on no talent, real talent is on broadway, most people become celebrities for the money and glamour, scientists, doctors, anthropologists, etc aren't driven by money and that's how it should be, even though they do deserve more and better, they're low key and even though people forget about their contributions, it doesn't bother many because they're that passionate about what they do and it's a good thing that money doesn't distract them, but I don't mean to denounce all actors and singers because those are respectable talents and art forms but the majority are quite mediocre in talent and looks(ironically they put a lot of emphasis on looks), i hate the commercial definition of beauty today but now I'm going off topic
the point is entertainers in the past were looked down on and now they make a ridiculous amount of money, but that's the way things work, it comes down to what you value more, your interests or money

At our school, coaches (who are teachers during the day) get paid about 2 dollars an hour extra for coaching. :(

Because TV commercials and other endorsement pay the teams who pay the coaches salaries. Supply and Demand.

you know i used to wonder about that but i found my answer, if police, nurses, etc.,did not go into the profession with their hearts we would be short changed most Dr's and such teachers do it for the joy of teaching or healing not for the money for the chance to serve ones fellow man and contribute to society and humanity for the love of ones neighbor not ones self or bank account

Leverage. The coach is high profile, so more people want to see his/her work.
