wheat, oats, rye, millet, buckwheat, and barley, have all been called "corn" at some time, because the English word "corn" simply means "seed". thus "acorn" is a simple contraction of "ake" (oak) and "corn" (seed), or "oakseed". the pilgrims called the new grain that the indians gave them "corn" because they knew it was a seed, but had never seen it before.
