The exact cause of PMS is unknown, but it seems to be related to the fluctuating levels of hormones, including estrogen and progesterone, that occur in preparation for menstruation.

There are many symptoms of PMS, and the number and severity of symptoms vary from woman to woman. In addition, the severity of the symptoms can vary from month to month.

Common symptoms of PMS include:

Bloating
Breast tenderness
Weight gain
Aggression
Trouble concentrating
Headaches/backaches
Food cravings/overeating
Fatigue
Tearfulness
Irritability
Anxiety
Mood swings and/or depression

"Scientists have been unable to identify a single cause of PMS. Theories range from hormonal and chemical to nutritional and psychological." The moodiness part of PMS is caused by a drop in the feel-good hormone serotonin. That is why some women crave chocolate and sweets because carbs will increase serotonin for a little bit. I have found that I'm likely to get colds, allergies, headaches, earaches, and tooth pain in the two weeks before my period. PMS is evil. Supposedly, if you reduce stress and eat better, your symptoms will lessen. Vitex (chasteberry) supplement seems to help with breast pain. See the source below. There are so many symptoms and ideas to treat it, I can't list it all here.

PMS is a disorder characterized by a set of hormonal changes that trigger disruptive symptoms in a significant number of women for up to two weeks prior to menstruation. Of the estimated 40 million suffers, more than 5 million require medical treatment for marked mood and behavioral changes. Often symptoms tend to taper off with menstruation and women remain symptom-free until the two weeks or so prior to the next menstrual period. These regularly recurring symptoms from ovulation until menses typify PMS, premenstrual syndrome.

It causes chemical imbalances throughout the body right before your period. PMS is more physical, you can get bloated cramps, etc.

There's something else called PMDD (which people still call PMS), which is when you can get really depressed and moody. This is a serious condition as it causes problems for women in their lives. It is hard to deal with someone who has PMDD which is worse than PMS.

Premenstrual Syndrome
It is the period before the bleeding part of your cycle.
Often associated with hormone surges, mood swings, physical bloating and pains in middle section of your body front or back.
PMS- is the common name for it now.
It varies in each woman.

My husband calls it "puffy monster symptoms"- I have a tendency to be a bit "cranky" during that time.- easy to temper or get mad.
